Get The Girl
Here's
the deal with this band: Roachito and Shortstick decided to toss
back a few cold ones at one of our favorite watering holes. Normally
when bands play at bars, Youngmanridge policy strictly states
that we leave ASAP. It's usually too damn loud to have a good
conversation and talk about whatever it is we need to talk about.
For some reason, we decided to stick around on this particular
night. While we were lamenting the idea that no one is visiting
this lovely website of ours, "Get the Girl" was gearing
up for the last part of their set.
Most
of the time, local bands playing in local bars just usually don't
do it for us. When "Get the Girl" started playing, Roachito
and I looked at each other and we were sort of like "Hey,
this doesn't sound half bad". More or less we decided to
do a little write up on them for our first indie music review
on the site.
After
all this rather slow build-up of the plot, I am sure you are asking
yourself "So how do they sound?". Guess what? I'm a
gonna tell you right now, so hold yer horses. The first thing
I think anyone will notice about this band when they listen to
them is that they have an 80's retro kind of sound and it works
pretty good. To add to the retro sound, especially on the CD that
they kindly gave us, the lead singer Carol sounds similar to Terry
Nunn of "Berlin" fame. Aside from the retro sound (I've
used that term way too much now and I promise, it is the last
time you'll read it in this review), they have a pretty cool crunch
thing going with the guitars making it a tad bit heavier than
what would be expected. The rest of the band sounded pretty good
and proficient on their instruments and actually sounded better
live than they did on the CD they were handing out. I don't want
to make it seem like the CD they handed out sucks, because it
sounds good as well, but in my humble opinion, if a band sounds
better live than they do on their recorded shit, they get some
extra props.
Before
I get going on to far with this, I'm gonna give you the bottom
line on this band: While I wouldn't listen to them everyday, I
think they have a cool sound. I know this isn't saying much, but
their sound is better than most of the shit on the alt-rock radio
stations these days. At the very least, I can recommend to readers
(all 2 or 3 of you) to go to their website and give them a listen.
